2010-11 Hayward R. Alker Postdoctoral Fellow: Mauricio Benítez-Iturbe

We are delighted to welcome the winner of the 2010-11 Hayward R. Alker Post-Doctoral Fellowship competition, Mauricio Benítez-Iturbe! Below is his short bio and areas of interest. This year's competition sought scholars who are doing innovative research on Latin America/Mexico.

Mauricio Benítez completed his Ph.D. in Political Science at the University of California, Berkeley in December 2008, and joined Chapman University in Orange, CA, as an Assistant Professor of Political Science in the fall of 2009. His research interests include the politics of public policy, political parties, and federalism. His dissertation, “The Politics of Distribution: Subnational Policy Regimes in Mexico,” examines the contrasts in the distributive regimes that have emerged in Mexican states after a major decentralization of budgetary control to the subnational level began in the 1980s.

During his time at CIS, Benítez will work toward the completion of a book manuscript on Mexico’s transition from full governmental discretion to comprehensive rules for the distribution of government-provided goods and services, as well as a new project on opposition politics in Latin America.

Mauricio, welcome to USC!
