Short Term Faculty Research Grants Amount: Up to $4000 The Center for International Studies announces its annual call for applications for the CIS Faculty Research Grants program. Our total budget allocated for this year (2006-2007) is $20,000 and the maximum amount available for each applicant is $2,500 (Pat will consider/discuss increasing this amount with the CIS Advisory Committee). Applications from CIS members will be considered on a rolling basis until all the funds are distributed. Funds must be spent prior to August 31, 2007.
Proposals should be submitted to the CIS director. They should be no more than one page in length with a brief yet detailed budget statement appended. The CIS Director, in consultation with the CIS Advisory Committee will evaluate the research proposals and decide whether or not the proposal will be funded.
At the conclusion of the grant, a brief (1 page) report outlining your accomplishments (including evidence of publications resulting from funded research) in connection with the CIS grant is required and will need to be submitted to the Director before future applications to the CIS Faculty Grants Fund will be considered.
Guidelines for submitting a proposal are as follows:
1. Research Assistance: Preference will be given to requests for research assistance: student collaboration and/or the use of work-study students is encouraged. Please remember to factor in summer-wage fringes for student employees (35%) into your budget request. If summer fringes are not included in the proposed budget, (if applicable) they will be deducted from the total funds awarded.
2. Software, hardware and publication costs, including reprints, will be considered.
3. Travel: Expenses will be reimbursed on a per diem basis.
a. Research travel requiring long term housing will be eligible for consideration only up to the maximum ($2,500).
b. Travel related to participation at conferences where papers are being presented by faculty will also be considered for funding.
c. Conference registration fees will be reimbursed within reason; however, association memberships will NOT be reimbursed.
4. Research Product: The application must indicate the intended research product, such as publishable work or data sets.
5. Funding of a book project will require the obligation to schedule a presentation at CIS.
6. Applicants are encouraged to apply to other USC and external sources of funds as well.
7. Other USC funding and outside funding relevant to the research proposal must be disclosed.
8. Funding to SIR faculty should not overlap with VKI funding. (SIR faculty, please consult VKI guidelines.)
9. When submitting a request, please include documentation of prior publications resulting from previous CIS funding.
