OUR MISSIONThe Center for International Studies (CIS) at the University of Southern California is deeply committed to expanding and refining an academic and practitioner understanding of international relations, globalization, cooperation, and conflict. Established in 1986, CIS brings together faculty and students from throughout the university to focus on the primary areas of academic inquiry for the 21st century: the economic, social, psychological, political, historical and geographic causes and effects of increased flows of goods, money, services, ideas, and culture across international borders. CIS also endeavors to broaden the scope and influence of our multidisciplinary research partnerships, and to develop new and innovative connections with both traditional and non-traditional joint research agendas. In sum, CIS is striving to become the hub for international programming at USC.
OUR HISTORYThe Center for International Studies was originally established as a research unit by the USC School of International Relations in 1986 to promote advanced research and critical debate of theoretical and policy issues in world affairs. The Center has since expanded its membership to include faculty in political science, religion, education, cinematic arts, medicine, engineering, american studies & ethnicity, foreign languages & cultures, communications, public administration, business, law, and economics. The Center supports the research of faculty and students; hosted scholars from the United States and abroad; organizes public seminars, workshops and conferences; promotes collaborative research projects; and contributes to public understanding of international affairs.
OUR FUTUREThe Center continues to maintain a focus on global presence by expanding our participation in international associations, deepening our relationships with various governments and leaders, and attracting new sources of support for CIS research, including foreign governments and organizations, new private foundation support, and local, state, and federal government funding. CIS continues to innovate within the fields of international relations and political science by expanding our research agenda to incorporate more more multidisciplinary approaches.
